Hot Coffee Revisited

It’s been a few months since what I’m now referring to as the ‘hot coffee incident’, but it’s spectre still lingers over myself and the characters. Recently, I’ve been called out on trying to back peddle. And you know what? It’s true. When reactions poured in, I looked at the whole scene with a new light. It wasn’t pretty. I posted a public apology at the time, but it’s still lingering in the corner of my mind. I would feel much better if I gave an explanation to how it all came about. Not to make excuses (which I’m sure I’ll still be accused of in some corners anyways), but because I’d at least like my readers to understand what lead to the biggest fuck up of the entire first year, which itself is very flawed.

To begin, I have to go back to the start of this comic. I had no bloody idea what I was doing. Seriously. Heck, after Crimson Latex, I wanted to do more adventure style comics. Somehow I wound up trying a few more BDSM-oriented affairs, and ended up going with C6 as my big foray into serious webcomicking. Now, I grew up on adventure comics, manga, and RPGs. Played a lot of D&D (I always figured I’d be writing campaign modules for a living before the net killed Dragon and Dungeon magazines) as a teen. What I knew of storytelling was widely tied to those kinda staples. So I had a vision of a fantasy-esque BDSM world filled with silly sight gags and harem-anime styled hijinks (which is ironic since I don’t like harem anime). So I got to work on a story that was supposed to be the literary equivalent of cotton-candy. But around #40, I noticed stronger reactions from readers. Comments about how I wasn’t portraying certain aspects of the lifestyle properly.

Now, BDSM is a very relationship oriented lifestyle. Every couple has their own individual set of rules and I’ll never be able to make everyone happy there. But I started to realize that readers were looking at this thing less as a fantasy romp and more of a loose introduction to BDSM basics for the uninitiated. I was representing a lifestyle they were very much a part of. This was not what I had intended when creating this comic. And I answered by going on my merry way with the same cotton-candy approach.

I’ve only been a sub for a little over a year. Yes, I am collared in real life, and yes, I’m still learning. Around the time I went ahead with the hot coffee segment, I was told by my Mistress to take a more active role in the community in order to learn and see what it’s really about. I did so. An my perception of it changed drastically. I had never subscribed to the Hollywood approach of it all being a masochistic sex game, but I suddenly saw what an intimate, and deeply personal way of life it is. And in turn, I looked back over my own work with great disappointment. The coffee scene no longer seemed playful fantasy, but a blight on an already troubled story.

Originally, the paixao raiz aphrodisiac emerged from two simple ideas.

One, I wanted to have a group of multi-cultural Mistresses who all had specialized methods that played on their regional origins. Like how anime always has the American as a Rambo knock off, or the French guy as a 17th century rapier-wielding sword fighter. To this, I envisioned an amazon-dwelling Mistress who was a master of herbs and a long-time friend of Sixx. One who could make concoctions for various purposes and produce a fictional stimulant.

Two, I wanted to have my own, playful version of the ‘stimulants’ you see in gas stations (most of which have ridiculously suggestive names).

I knew that Sixx and Laura already had a very sexual relationship (which might have been good knowledge to disclose to the audience), so the idea of Sixx using an aphrodisiac to spice up a catsuit polishing segment seemed pretty in line with the fantasy universe I was running on. So when I received a harsh backlash, my first reaction was anger. What was wrong with these people? It’s just a make-believe plant in a make-believe universe, right?

Yes and no. While this is a fantasy world, and will retain elements therof, I have also seen that BDSM is not an abstract series of rituals. And that by writing a story like this, I am charged with certain responsibilities I didn’t plan to take on. And admittedly, refused until recently. I didn’t plan to have to write a story that bridges the fantasy and reality like this. I mean… that’s really a hell of a burden. It’s like learning to sing with Simon Cowell as your instructor. You’re afraid to raise your voice for fear of screwing it all up.

What this all comes down to is that when I became a bigger part of the lifestyle, I realized I couldn’t just expect to have another bondage fantasy comic that addressed only the icons and sexual aspects. That my entire first year had been a stumbling attempt to find my footing. I threw out the second half of what I’d written and decided it was time to make the characters behave like people, not stereotypes. And the first step in that was to contend with the coffee issue. Completely out of line with the relationship these characters were supposed to have. So I’ve taken great care to attempt and move this story forward in a manner that allows me to resolve my own mistakes, and show that everyone in BDSM, even the owners, make serious missteps. I only regret that my characters must carry the burden of my screw ups.

It’s been a long year. And a lot has gone wrong both in the comic and in real life. I’m trying. It’s very hard to put yourself into the public eye and, even harder when you have a segment of it devoted to watching your every step so they can publicly make a laughing stock of you (thought that was over with High School). But ya know… I really love doing this thing. And for as flawed as it’s been, I don’t regret that I’ve started it, and I’ve met a lot of nice, wonderful people through it. I resolve this year to generate a more interesting story, better art, and entertain. I hope this gives those who have taken issue with me a better understanding of what’s lead to the hot coffee incident, and the rough character-developing of the comic’s first year.

I’d also like to take this moment to apologize for my temper during the early days of this comic. I wasn’t prepared to be a public figure, and reacted to some criticism that wasn’t even that harsh with serious childish retaliation. Bobbond, if you’re still reading this, I owe you an apology first and foremost. Nothing you said deserved the verbal lashing I gave. And I’m sorry. LordDragonMaster, of Demon Candy fame, I’m also sorry for the ensuing fallout we suffered after I threw my tantrum. I’m glad we were able to resolve it, and let me take this opportunity to direct my readers to his awesome, fantasy-based BDSM comic, Demon Candy.

I believe you have hit the nail on the head when you observed that this lifestyle is so many different things to so many people. It is altogether too true you won’t be able to make all the people happy all the time.

It is amazing, what your public expects out of you, isn’t it, Wolfe? I always looked upon your story as a flight of fantasy. I love your art and only suffer disappointment in the fact that I don’t look as good for my Master as the girls look.

‘Tis a heavy, and possibly unfair, burden you carry in being stuck with representing an exceedingly complex lifestyle.

hugs, bobbi

I like how the story is going now. People do make mistakes. And relationships are built on communication. Adults will understand that mistakes have been made and will work together to correct the mistake and learn from it.

Still loving the webcomic and I think that you’ve done a beautiful job of moudling the storyline slightly differently. To me the last dozen pages have been an incredible read, the way the characters are evolving now does carry a much stronger sense of relationship. Almost like the blaze of infatuation making way for the steady burn of something far more involved and enriching

As an observation off of what I’ve seen you post about, C6′s evolution could perhaps be paralelled onto your own personal evolution over the past months, of how Collar 6 has influenced you and how the changed you is in turn influencing the direction you take with your writing (and drawing). Changing from a fun romp of fantasy and fun into a deeper and more meaningful relationship (perhaps even a duality or symbiosis?)…

I tend to read a lotinto what I see so I may well be pretty far off the mark, but I can definitely see a trend towards something truly staggering and enriching in the future of Collar 6 :)

I’m sorry that you’ve had to put up with all the things that you have talked about here simply for doing something fun and letting others share in it. I myself have noticed that there is an undercurrent of “I know best” in the bdsm community and every one seems to think they get to put their two cents worth into everything that is out there. I always looked at this as a silly fun lil sex romp comic, as you said with some Harem style anime themes ((I do like them, oh my goddess, tenchi YAYYY SILLINESS lol)) So I would like to take this opportunity to tell you that the “Coffee” story line did not bother me at all and if you caught flack from it then some people should get a sense of humor ITS…A….COMIC good lord its not as if these are real people. With all of that being said thank you so much for sharing this with all of us out here, I find it a funny cute lil comic that puts a smile on my face. And its always nice to meet another gamer geek I’m a D and D player from way back even though I cant seem to get a game going right now. If you ever need someone to talk to about table top rpgs I’m your geek, always up for some conversation. Well I think I’ve rambled enough, again thanks for all your hard work and for sharing it with us. I look forward to more comics as they come.

We never truely leave high school. It’s sad, but true. As for mistakes, welcome to the human race, come on in, we have cookies! I like your story, it’s interesting, I feel like I should be taking notes on the BDSM community (I’m fairly new). As for your comic, remember this: You are the artist; You are the creator; You are the one responsible for the content; You are the finial authority on this subject; This is Your world. If someone doesn’t like your work, take the constructive critisism into account, and the rest, dump it. The only authority here is you…and possibly your mistress or master.

That being said, you can always tell me to go stuff myself.

I’ve never posted here, but upon reading your most recent entry I felt compelled to.

One of the things I’ve enjoyed most about this comic since I stumbled upon it is the way you capture the relationship between Laura and Sixx. While I was a touch troubled by the drugging incident, I’ve found you do a remarkable job of communicating the two characters sharing a deep found affection for each other that is one of the largest things that draws me to the life style.

That being said, I commend you for trying to capture such a complicated thing between two people in a comic form with comedy being included. It is not as simple a thing to communicate as other relationships, and it certainly is difficult to frame in a comical way, but I’ve come to enjoy the comic enough to coax my master into reading it.

Looking forward to more from you!

I’ve kind of always seen this comic as fantasy. And I thought the “drugging” was kind of hot. I didn’t know that the coffee thing upset anyone till I read this. I don’t understand why.

But then again, I’m not collared, I’m not a mistress and I never will be besides some light every-once-and-awhile bondage play in an otherwise average relationship.

The action didn’t disturb me. It felt playful and while maybe not what I’d call good taste, it was kind of sexy. When I started to dislike the comic is when suddenly we veered off the story path to discuss our feelings. D: Like I feel like this whole contest this has been forgotten.

And maybe what happened in the comic doesn’t line up with actual BDSM practice and play but this could easily be seen as a parody of that lifestyle. That being said I don’t think it gives BDSM a bad name for your cartoon characters to use a little aphrodisiac. :/ Anyone who says so was already on the defensive long before this comic showed up.

I encourage you to do what you want. Your readers are here for the ride. They don’t get to build the road unless you want them to. If they don’t like where their being taken well… they can always get off at the next stop.

The last several pages feel forced to me. Don’t force it. D: I really liked how you were doing it when it was you doing it and not you and everyone else’s opinions.

Hey,
I came across your comic by chance yesturday and couldnt help reading through it from start to end – I dont usually stay up till the wee hours engrossed in a webcomic but here is the thing, at the beginning I was in a ‘cool, funny bdsm comic, this is novel and should be entertaining’ mind set (I’m not into the bdsm scene myself but am definatly interested in it) and as the hour hand moved towards ‘your gonna feel like crap at work tomorrow’-o-clock I couldnt stop reading wanting to know how the damage to your characters relationship gets resolved, completely drawn into your story and the dynamics that are running between your characters.

Only having read this one post and not knowing fully what has happened in the past I just wanted to say that, from an outside view, it seems that the issues you have encounterd have only made your comic and story line stronger and you should be given alot of credit for managing to keep the comic going to the place it is now.

Youll have to excuse me, I have to go figure out how to fit you up on my already full bookmarks bar…

Really all that I want to say has already been said. :D

I’ve always seen this comic as fantasy – some little factoids like when the safe word was being explained add a fun little kick to an already fun comic. I love that the characters were talking about subspace at one point and I knew what they were talking about with out it being explained. The Harem, the “There-is-only-ONE-personal-slave-and-YOU-are-the-CHOSEN-ONE!”, the stimulate, the world wide Mistress registration board and balls, the endless money, the mixing of sex and play are all common fantasies. I love what you have done with them.

I am liking the ‘talking about feelings’ bit that is going on, but agree that it should not be forced and if it rambles on to long it can kill an other wise really good story. People are gonna bitch no matter what you do, really you have two people you need to worry about: Your Mistress and yourself. :D

Fans come and go and can be fickle vain things, but- my drill Sergent has said it best: The only person I’m concerned about angering is the one I wake up with every morning.

Wolfe…

i will fully admit to being a full nerd to this comic. i stay up into the wee hours id the night to be one of the first to read it. Yes, it’s a playful fanyasy. The coffee scene didn’t bother me in the least (actually, i kinda wish it were real. :D ) i agree with Ginger… you are human. Everyone messes up from time to time. you pick yourself up and moe on.

Anyways, please keeep doing what your doing. my Owner and i read your comic every time a new one is posted.

Also, do you have a fetlife or mydungeonspace? If so, i would love to add you!

@Duzzykins… if you don’t have a fetlife, i suggest you get one… it is a great place to learn more about the BDSM community!

I’m glad you learned those things too Wolf. Mistress taught/showed me the same things you mention as well.. it’s not just about fun sexy games and wearing shiny latex (though we both agree that’s one of the best parts hehe) but it works like a ‘normal relationship’ does, only a bit different.

Don’t get too hung on the whole stimulant issue..if anything it just made the characters more 3-dimentional with these current pages. ^_^

And 3 Dimentional characters is something Hollywood fails to achieve in movies these days. You’re now officially better than Hollywood. (well i think so anyways..)

Can’t really add anything new to what’s been said so far.
Yes, there may have been mis-steps, but I’ve yet to see a webcomic that didn’t have them in the early days.
You have improved a lot in the year, and the story has gone along well…at least in my opinion. You will always have those ‘readers’ that only hit webcomics to talk a lot of smack and point and laugh. A good many of those people likely can’t draw much more than a stick figure, and are lucky they can write a check.
I’m gonna stick with reading this as long as you keep making it, because I saw something in the first few pages I read, and think that you have the potential to really progress with a really great storyline.

Just try not to be *TOO* serious in the storyline. Heh!
Keep up the good work, wolfe, you have a loyal fanbase.

I believe in Wolfe :thumbs up:

Nice one Wolfe, your doing just fine and you, like everyone, are learning all them time and becoming a better individual for it. I’m ready to follow where ever your story takes us, whether it is to meet 9 unique mistress all with a different flare, or just the D/s relationship between people who care about each other. Keep it up, it can only get even better from here.

Also I love the colouring and background work you did on page 76!

And thanks for the tag to Demon Candy Parallel!

~LDM

Wolfe, you’re doing awesome work in this. I think that your responsiveness to your readers has been absolutely amazing and the way that you have incorporated this into the comic is to be commended. As another person said, you are the artist and the creator of the world of your comic. Take constructive criticism as you see fit and pitch the rest out the window. The readers are just here for the ride, you’re doing this for YOU! :)

-nods- It’s a very, very difficult thing you did, accepting what you’ve done wrong, and even the things you might have not done wrong, but that still offended people. I don’t know if I would have the courage to make such a long and involved apology for a story I wrote.

While the incident did trouble me, though I do see your point about one thing – it’s fiction. No character, no storyline, no author is perfect. Those who expect you to be were doomed to failure before they even started.

I’ve always loved this comic – keep on going with it. =3

I like the comic. It’s not real life. I don’t expect it to be.

From a writing standpoint…yeah, it’s got a few plot holes you could throw a dog through. But it’s new, and you’re still feeling your way along a bit. You want to see plot holes? Go look at some classic Kirby Marvel stuff. Make you want to yack. And just how many times have they retconned the comic book stuff because of continuity? Don’t worry about it.

You don’t like the paixao raiz? You’re not required to keep it. You’re the writer here. You’re the deity. You know what you could do? You could say it was just a touch of cinnamon, and the reaction was just *suggestion* — there’s really *no such thing* as “paixao raiz”. And in fact, there are very few true aphrodisiacs. Most are simply irritants of one sort or another, or vasodilators that make you feel flushed and tingly, and you *associate* that with feeling turned on. But drugs that specifically ‘take away volition and make pliable the will’? Unless it’s a roofie, and they were *unconscious*, poppycock. Blame it on a form of hypnosis, and stop feeling guilty.

Your comic is good. I’m enjoying it. Don’t worry about the authenticity cops.

Glad that you have addressed this the way you have in your comic and in your explanation. It has given more depth to the characters, especially the Maid, and to many of us, more depth to you as well. I look forward to seeing what you have for us next.

Wow. Not being a member of the forums, I’d no idea that this little comic had provoked such a storm of controversy. It’s incredible the things people will get angry over. Please don’t let anyone’s criticism get to you personally, Wolfe. No comic is going to be to everyone’s tastes – everyone has their own expectations and hopes, so you can’t please everybody. The only important thing is to please yourself.

You seem to lack confidence in your own abilities, but let me reassure you that you’re a pretty decent writer (and a damn good artist). Your problem is that you’re unsure of the tone and direction you want the strip to take, and after a year it’s inevitable you’d have changed your mind a bit from your original plans, especially as your real life has changed. But it really doesn’t matter what you choose for the comic, as long as you’re happy with the result. Don’t worry too much about mistakes you’ve made in the past – just ignore them and move on. Spending ages dwelling on them only makes matters worse.

Personally, I’m happy with the idea of the strip becoming more character-focused, but I think the discussion over the last few pages has gone on a bit long. Like I said, you don’t have to spend ages explaining away mistakes or justifying yourself – just carry on in the direction you want, and let the fans choose whether to follow. If they don’t like it, tough – it’s your comic. The important thing is that *you* do.

I feel for you. From the time I first spotted your comic, I looked at it as total fantasy, so the coffee incident hit me no harder than a murder in a mystery novel. It’s make believe. I recognize that others would have more invested in how the culture is portrayed, being as I am so removed from it by my own lack of trust for anyone in terms of giving up control, and my resistance to being THAT in control of anyone else. Even so, I can enjoy the art, and the fantasy, without forgetting it’s a comic. Hope folks cut you some slack, and keep up the good work, whatever direction you take it.

Every relationship is built on trust – BDSM relationships even more so. I like seeing the character development … but can we move it along. It is getting boring as a reader. It is hard to have an intense dialog in 3 frames twice a week without it taking WEEKS to have the conversation. But then the readers have weeks of talk with no action. I applaud you for taking on this subject matter. There needs to be more to eliminate the wrongful perceptions and educate the ignorant. You are brave to take this on and I applaud you for it. I look forward to reading the next episode, the next 10 episodes, the next 100… CHEERS GA Peach

I only read your comic every few weeks to let the strips build up and enjoy the story. I’m proud of you for seeing the needs of your fans and the needs of human characters in a fantasy story. Good luck on the rest of the strip!

There are people that are going to criticize your story no matter what you write, even if it’s 100% realistic without a trace of imaginary aphrodisiac to be found! That’s just the nature of creating content. I think this is even more so with something as deeply personal as BDSM. Reading some of the groups on FetLife, for example, one could easily be forgiven for coming away with the impression that none of us agree on anything!

Really, you’ve got a good comic here, even with some of the obvious growing pains. It’s not meant to be a primer on the BDSM lifestyle and I think you’ve made that clear enough. (Of course, I’d be somewhat horrified to think that any web comic would be seen as such unless that is the state goal of the artists and even then I’d be dubious at best.)

Keep up the good work!
- awfulhorrid on FetLife

The Moment I stumbled upon this Webcomic, I was impressed. BDSM, the play, the relationships are incredibly complex. And most of all, they are very humane. Full of tender moments, mistakes and all that other stuff people do :)

I was impressed, because I felt you tackled this in a webcomic. Of all possible art forms, a comic is probably the best way to share this bit of human nature, technically, but also the one with the hardest stand. Comics are generally still seen as kid’s stuff, and subject to prejudice, much like BDSM lifestyle is often reduced to a cliché.

I immensly enjoy reading Collar 6. There is an underlying tone of the “real” BDSM world, easy to digest. And it was funny. It made me laugh, and laugh about “real” stuff, like the safeword or the gag (the ball, not the joke).

You grew into that, it wasn’t there from the beginning. And I understand you wanting to lead your character development deeper, make it more real, especially if things in your real life give you a necessity to do so. But, you are trying to reach two different audiences, with differen necessities: the BDSM community, who all know what it is about…. and the rest of the world.

To the first group you probably owe a “real” depiction of the lifestyle. But if you loose your light tone, you probably loose the rest. And I do think humor is the best way to teach, to communicate the new. A good laugh makes you come back.

So, to sum it up, a request: please do not loose your humor in your quest for a real depiction of BDSM. Keep in the real, but don’t let it scare the fun away. You can do both. And it’s fresh, and new, and shiy.
There’s the problem with doing something new: people dont know what to expect. They’ll manage.

I know full well how hard it is, I myself am an artist, a painter, and right now I am trying to depict the emotional deepness of BDSM… and it’s incredibly hard to do. Stay on your way.

Best regards,
Angel of Clumsiness
(artist, teacher, switch and roleplayer :)

The apologies for what you did in the comic with your characters are terrible. You should never be apologizing for what you did or how you chose to write the story or how you choose to depict certain events. Yes, the apologies for throwing tantrums and having outs with people are well in order, but apologizing for your art never is.

You need to realize that Collar 6 is yours. It belongs to you. Not your fans. Not the community. Not the web. No one, but you. Anyone that says this is an unrealistic depiction is either too childish to see this is a made up comic or is too close minded to think that something different could possibly occur. Anyone that feels they know best and knows everything and every possible nuance is totally wrong. No one knows it all. Its not possible. No one can ever think of every kind of situation. And really, the ‘hot coffee’ incident as you refer to it has done something great. Its allowed you to explore other aspects and show a beautiful relationship.

But as I said before. Don’t apologize. Don’t whine about how much you suck and the writing is bad and you shouldn’t have done something and you regret and this or that. This is your creation. It belongs to you. Don’t let everyone else tell you how to portray your creation and don’t lose the humor either.

There were people offended by that? Seriously? Look I don’t know if anyone has bothered saying this yet but this is a STORY and a comic book at that, there are going to be fantastic elements that add interest to and twists to the plot line and honestly this is one of the better comics I’ve seen. The flat truth is there are going to be people who complain simply for the fact they want to complain and have something to bitch about.

Yes in the BDSM community the idea of drugging someone is controversial but this is as I said a FANTASY, and I`m sure some people have much much worse fantasy’s then slipping someone a Mickey, which by the way is already fetish. This is not something new and definitely not new to community. I’ve studied the life style since I was 16 which is more years ago then I care to count, I’ve seen more, done more, and experienced more than most of these people combined and the only feasible reason any might take offense to this is that people outside the community may take it the wrong way. But they would do that no matter what you did, so it’s a moot point.

In the end they are just trying to bitch at you till they get a reaction and the more you bend to them the more they will attack you. I am also an artist I am not a writer but I am currently working on a couple of web comics and I am sure I have already offended or will soon be offending someone if not a lot of people and that’s their deal it’s my work and my creation, my audience and I mean my true audience will get its meaning as with any work of art and the rest will stair at it and see whatever they can complain about most.

In summation I don’t know you personally, but know where you’re coming from. You don’t need to apologize for your work unless you really feel the need to and not because a few people got their panties in a bunch. And finally you do fine work, this is a kick ass comic and you really should keep going with it in whatever manner you see fit.
